“Married here this day”
What lovely language they used in the late 18th century and early 19th century in Gretna Green, Scotland on the Register of Marriage. By quirk of law, anyone could marry anyone in Scottland, as long as there were 2 signing witnesses. And the groom was at least 14 years old, and the bride, 12! Here is a copy of a scandalous Gretna Green marriage:
Go figure, but for centuries the local blacksmiths conducted many of the eloping couples’ wedding ceremonies over the Anvil in the Blacksmith’s shop.
You can learn more about the interesting history of eloping couples at Gretna Green – but what we love, is blacksmith Andrew Lang’s ( the Anvil Priest) lovely language, which works so beautifully for a wedding announcement for eloping, or destination weddings.
