Gardens as Wedding Gifts: a Modern Urban Trend.
Freedom Food? Urban Homesteading? Chickens and goats replacing dogs and kitties? Edible gardens are an incredibly fast moving trend, here in the SoCal area. We confess, we put in raised beds and got our seedlings in. We got heirloom tomatoes at Tomatomania, seeds from friends, and bought more seeds at Path to Freedom last weekend. And, lots of seedlings from Jimmy Williams of Hayground Organics at the Hollywood Farmers Market.
So, I was listening to KCRW (Santa Monica Public Radio) this morning, for my weekly fix of the Market Report. That is, the Farmer’s Market Report segment of Good Food. Laura Avery interviewed the newly married owner/chefs of Rustic Canyon and Huckleberry Bakery.
Zoe and Josh got married in January, and instead of traditional gift registry, they asked friends to contribute to their edible garden fund. Talk about gifts that keep on giving! They tore out their driveway and lawn, and put in a full edible garden, with the front devoted to citrus and fruit trees.
Jimmy Williams put in the organic vegetable garden.
What a great, and truly giving, wedding gift.
Suddenly, that food processor makes sense.

I love this idea, it’s fresh and good for the environment. There is actually a lot that goes into starting an edible garden from scratch, so having friends and family contribute is a great way to get started (maybe they could contribute some labor as well
)
